My heart hurts for Japan

JMR900433818ust yesterday we were learning about disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis and floods.  Now a devestating 8.9 earthquake happened this morning off the coast of Japan.

What can we do?  Check out CNN’s article on Japan Relief: How You can Help.  Maybe we, as GATErs, could do something together to help these people.  What do you think?

The Great California Shakeout

On October 21st, we will be participating in the Great California Shakeout ShakeOut_GetReady_300x250at 10:21 am.  This is a statewide effort to encourage schools and organizations to practice safety procedures in case of an earthquake.  Last year 6.9 million people in the state participated in “Duck, Cover, and Hold on”.   Do you know what to do if there was an earthquake?  Take this quiz by the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management!

Since Natural Disasters is the 5th grade project, I am looking for some volunteers to photograph, videotape, podcast (audio record), and write a blog post about the experience. If you are a 5th grader who would like to volunteer, please leave me a comment about what you would like to do.  I need 2-3 of each.
