MH900140541We have been watching 5th and 6th GATErs do their end of unit projects for a couple of weeks  now.  So far we’ve had PowerPoints, videos, Vokis, demonstrations, and Prezis.   I am so impressed so far with the work you have done so far! We’ve had some technical difficulties sharing some of your projects and I apologize for that.  I can’t wait to publish some of them on the blog.  If yours is polished and ready to go, leave me a comment so I can post it on the blog!

Citing Your Sources

When a scholar learns something from a resource, he/she needs to give credit to the source.  Watch the video below to learn about copyright.

If you use parts of someone else’s work (document, website, book, picture, music or video) you MUST give them credit. Here is an example of how to cite a website that you used:

“Types of Volcanoes.” Enchanted Learning. 8 June 2005 <http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/volcano/types/index.shtml>

Last week we talked about copyright and how we can’t just use any image. So what can we do?

  1. Use Creative Commons images

Flick CC images have been shared with the public and can be used if you give credit to the owner. (blocked at school)

Microsoft Office Clip Art can be used at school.

2. Use your own photos.

Take pictures with your camera or draw a picture on paper and take a photo of it.

3. Create your own images using a range of different tools

Use the Paint tools on your computer

How do you know that??

MH900365800Today you will be taking notes in your Thinking Maps about your Natural Disaster.  Remember to write down the resources you used to help you answer the question.  If you used a website, you will need to write down the following (for example):

“Types of Volcanoes.” Enchanted Learning. 8 June 2011 http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/volcano/types/index.shtml

Need resources?  Check out our wiki page that I started on resources or just start searching!

We have been studying Natural Disasters for a few months now and it’s time for you to show what you know!  You will become experts on one natural disaster and work in small groups to share the information you have found. Within each small group, you will collaborate to prepare a natural disaster preparedness presentation containing the following information:

Content

  1. What are characteristics of the natural disaster?
  2. What warning does it give?
  3. What was the most memorable historical incident involving the natural disaster studied? When did it occur?
  4. Where else has the natural disaster occurred?
  5. Explain what can be done to prepare for the studied natural disaster.
  6. Explain the steps to take if a disaster occurs.

Presentation Options

Presentations should creatively show what you’ve learned.  For example,

Today, I need to know your plans.  Fill out the form below with your group.

Today you will research the various ways that people can prepare for natural disasters and what they should do when one has occurred.  Study what warnings, if any, precede the disaster and what residents can do to prepare. topBanner FEMA (The Federal Emergency Management Agency) has a great website for kids.

How has your family perpared for disasters at home?

Today we did some experiments with air to help us understand natural disasters. We learned 3 things:
1. Air takes up space.
2. Air has weight (although our experiment was inconclusive)
3. Air applies pressure .

Hypothesis

Last week you learned about the top 3 Natural Disasters in San Diego.  Today we are going to hypothesize about what natural disasters you think are more likely to happen in North Carolina where our ePals live?

In the email

  1. Introduce yourself.  Tell them your age and gender; family size and members;  and favorite things to do.
  2. Share your research on natural disasters so far.  DO NOT TELL THEM THE TOP 3 DISASTERS IN OUR AREA!! They will be guessing about that later.
  3. Tell them your hypothesis for their top 3 disasters and why you think that.
